The discovery of being: writings in existential psychology
"Out of long experience in helping people with their problems, Rollo May now offers his views on the healing art itself. He takes us beyond traditional psychology and psychiatry that emphasize the achievement of satisfactions but overlook the individual's deep-seated purposes and values, like prestige, power, and tenderness. These human concerns are so fundamental that they take on greater importance in life than survival itself. 'When you see a person as a composite of drives and deterministic forces, ' Dr. May writes, 'you have everything except the one to whom these experiences happen, everything except the existing person himself.' Rollo May is not one of those who are content to label neurosis a failure of adjustment. 'An adjustment is exactly what a neurosis is; and that is just its trouble. It is a necessary adjustment by which a person's centeredness can be preserved, a way of accepting nonbeing in order that some little being may be preserved. And in most cases it is a boon which this adjustment breaks down.' The Discovery of Being is addressed to all concerned with the causes of loneliness and isolation and with the search to find new and firm mooring posts in an age of anxiety."
